American scientists reported today that the Arctic ice cap continues to melt due to global warming, with August recording the second-largest summer ice melt area in 30 years of satellite observations.
The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center stated that measurements on August 26 showed the Arctic ice cap area to be 5.26 million square kilometers, smaller than the 5.32 million square kilometers observed on September 21, 2005, marking the second-largest reduction in the history of the Arctic ice cap.
The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, located in Boulder, Colorado, reported that since early August, the Arctic ice cap has decreased by 2.06 million square kilometers.
The Snow and Ice Data Center noted that the speed and scale of the ice melt are so rapid and extensive that the Arctic ice cap area could become smaller than the 4.25 million square kilometers recorded in the summer of 2007. The 2007 measurement was the smallest since satellite observations began.
