A groundbreaking scientific study in Spain has reached a startling conclusion: pollution can cause obesity. Scientists have discovered that if fetuses are exposed to common chemical substances such as pesticide components in the womb, their chances of becoming obese in the future are significantly increased.
This newly published scientific research is the first to link the effects of chemical substances on fetuses with obesity. Scientists compared the levels of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in the umbilical cords of 403 infants before and after birth, and then tracked the growth process of these infants. The results showed that children with high levels of HCB were twice as likely to become obese before the age of six and a half compared to other children.
Hexachlorobenzene is a pesticide that, although widely banned by the international community before this study was conducted, still persists in the environment and enters the human body through food.
Currently, obesity has become a health issue troubling many countries, especially developed ones. The medical community believes that the main cause of obesity is that people consume more calories than they expend, with improper diet and lack of exercise being key factors. However, these two factors alone seem insufficient to explain why obesity has been spreading worldwide in recent years.
