The first large-scale survey report on mercury levels in the hair of residents in our country was released today! The Environmental Protection Agency's survey shows that the average mercury content in the hair of our citizens is 2.4mg/kg, which is similar to Japan but significantly higher than the United States, where 80% of the population has an average hair mercury content below 1mg/kg.
Additionally, the survey found that the more large marine fish consumed, the higher the mercury content in the hair.
People who frequently eat large marine fish have a hair mercury content of 3.68mg/kg, which is six times the average of 0.55mg/kg for those who do not eat fish.
After a year-long investigation, the Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Testing Institute announced the results today, completing a total of 1066 valid samples. The average mercury content in the hair of our citizens is 2.4mg/kg, with a statistical range from 0.012mg/kg to 18.9mg/kg.
The Environmental Testing Institute stated that there is currently no minimum tolerance level for mercury content in the human body set domestically. However, the international medical community generally believes that exceeding 50mg/kg can be considered mercury poisoning, and if it exceeds 200mg/kg, neurological poisoning can occur, affecting intelligence and causing unsteady walking.
When differentiated by gender, the average mercury content in the hair of Taiwanese men is 2.92mg/kg, while for women it is 1.84mg/kg, similar to the survey results in Japan but significantly higher than in the United States.
In addition to frequent consumption of large marine fish increasing mercury levels in the body, the survey also found a significant difference in hair mercury content between meat-eaters and vegetarians. The average for vegetarians is only 0.32mg/kg, while for meat-eaters it is 2.54mg/kg, which is eight times higher than that of vegetarians.
Furthermore, the survey found that dentists who frequently come into contact with mercury have an average hair mercury content of 3.94mg/kg, which is 1.6 times the average. When differentiated by county and city, Hualien County residents have the highest average of 3.09mg/kg, while Taichung City has the lowest average of 1.83mg/kg.
