In the past two days, most of Taiwan has been extremely cold. The Central Weather Bureau stated that this morning, the lowest temperatures in Taichung and Chiayi were only 5.4 degrees Celsius, and Taipei was only 6.4 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, this cold wave is nearing its end, and temperatures will slowly rise starting tomorrow. However, the Northern Hemisphere has been exceptionally "cool" this year. Researcher Wang Zhonghe from the Academia Sinica's Institute of Earth Sciences mentioned that this is still related to global "warming." The Earth cannot naturally regulate excessive heat energy, so it brings the "cold" from high latitudes like the Arctic to lower latitudes. Therefore, people should still take good care of the Earth.

Chen Weiliang, a senior forecaster at the Central Weather Bureau, said that this cold wave started to take effect last Saturday. By this morning, except for the Hengchun area, most of Taiwan was quite cold. Especially this year, Taichung and Chiayi were only 5.4 degrees Celsius around 5 a.m., and Taipei was only 6.4 degrees Celsius at the same time. The last time Taipei experienced a low of 6.4 degrees Celsius was on January 24, 2004.

However, Chen Weiliang mentioned that this cold wave is essentially coming to an end today. Starting tomorrow, people will feel "a bit better," but a significant rise in temperature will likely only occur after the 17th. He also noted that the low temperatures in the next two days might still hover around 10 degrees Celsius, so people should continue to keep warm.

In fact, many countries in the Northern Hemisphere have also been extremely cold this January. Data shows that snow fell in Guizhou, China, and heavy snow also fell in Marseille, along the Mediterranean's Côte d'Azur in Europe.

Wang Zhonghe explained that everyone knows the Earth is facing a warming problem, mainly because humans have generated too much "heat energy" for the Earth. In the past, the Earth's temperature increased by one degree every 1,000 years on average, but now it increases by one degree every 100 years, "a rate more than 10 times faster." The Earth can naturally regulate heat energy, but with the current rapid increase in temperature, the Earth overreacts, leading to particularly hot summers and cold winters.

He gave an example: heat energy can be positive or negative. When the Earth has too much heat energy, it also brings the "cold" from high latitudes to lower latitudes, making winters in lower latitudes feel very cold. However, Wang Zhonghe stated that under the influence of global warming, both winter and summer temperatures will become more extreme, but summers will be longer and winters shorter.

As for why Taiwan has been so uncomfortably cold these days, Wang Zhonghe said the main reason is still the Siberian cold high-pressure system moving down through North and East China to the East China Sea. Due to the Earth's rotation, the airflow turns, forming what we call the northeast monsoon. However, the current "height" of the northeast monsoon is only about 2,000 meters, so it is somewhat blocked by the Central Mountain Range. People in the northeastern areas not blocked by the Central Mountain Range feel the cold the most.
