British explorer Pen Hadow embarked on an Arctic expedition today to measure the thickness of the melting ice cap, enabling scientists to predict how long it will take for the ice cap to completely melt.

In the severe cold of minus 50 degrees Celsius, the exploration team will carry SPRITE radar to measure the thickness of the ice cap every 10 centimeters over the 1,100-kilometer journey of the Arctic expedition.

The radar data will be transmitted to the Naval Postgraduate School in California, where Professor Wieslaw Maslowski will assist in building evidence of the ice cap structure to predict how long it will take for the polar ice cap to completely melt.

According to the Catlin Arctic Survey, the floating sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is melting rapidly and is expected to completely melt by 2013. Many are concerned that there will be no permanent ice in the Arctic during the summer months.

The results show that the warming effect of the ocean absorbs more solar energy, which is then reflected onto the ice cap, accelerating the melting of the ice. This will significantly alter the ecosystem, including the habitat of polar bears.
