The Department of Health has revised the total heavy metal limit standards for concentrated traditional Chinese medicine preparations, commonly known as scientific Chinese medicine. The current three standards of 30, 50, and 100 ppm will be unified to below 30 ppm. Scientific Chinese medicine produced from the first of next month must comply with the new standards.

In addition to the total heavy metal limit standards, 33 commonly used scientific Chinese medicines, including Gegen Tang, Xiao Qing Long Tang, and Jiawei Xiaoyao San, must also meet regulations for individual heavy metal content such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead. Among them, the limits for arsenic and lead are below 3 and 10 ppm, respectively, while cadmium and mercury must be below 0.5 ppm.
