The Western Pacific Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned today that if no action is taken to address the issue of drug resistance, we may face a future where illnesses become untreatable.

Headquartered in Manila, the WHO Western Pacific Office issued a statement today, stating that drug resistance has become a complex global problem, not only deadly but also increasing medical costs and jeopardizing patient care.

The statement pointed out that diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria should have been controlled decades ago. Taking multidrug-resistant tuberculosis as an example, an estimated 440,000 new cases emerge globally each year, with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis cases reported in 58 countries.

Additionally, diseases like malaria and gonorrhea are being hindered by pathogen resistance, and the frequency of superbugs acquired in hospitals is increasing daily.

Dr. Shin Young-soo, Director of the WHO Western Pacific Office, noted that although WHO launched the "Global Strategy for Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance" as early as 2001, it has not been widely implemented.

On World Health Day today, WHO introduced a six-point policy package, including the implementation of comprehensive national programs; strengthening surveillance and laboratory capabilities; ensuring a steady supply of quality medicines; regulating and promoting the rational use of medicines and proper patient care; enhancing infection prevention and control in healthcare settings; and fostering innovation, research, and development.

Dr. Shin Young-soo stated that the six-point policy package targets health officials, policymakers, the public, patients, and pharmaceutical companies, aiming to raise awareness of the drug resistance issue. He also hopes that all 193 member states will take concrete actions to prevent further deterioration of the situation. 1000407
