The World Health Organization (WHO) convened an international conference in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, on the 1st, where it established a globally unified standard for the locations of 361 acupuncture points used in acupuncture.
According to a report by Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun on the 2nd, there have been slight discrepancies in the locations of acupuncture points adopted by various countries around the world, which has caused confusion in the international comparison of the effectiveness of acupuncture. Therefore, the WHO has been working since 2003 to establish a world standard, focusing on China, Japan, and South Korea.
The international conference was attended by representatives from nine countries, including China, Japan, and South Korea. In the final stage of discussions, experts from various countries still had disputes over six acupuncture points. The conference then adopted a voting method to reach a consensus, and the unused acupuncture point locations were also included in the appendix as references.
It is reported that the WHO will use this world standard as a basis to conduct research on verifying the functions of various acupuncture points in the future.
