Former Director of the Department of Pharmaceutical Affairs at the Department of Health, Wang Huipo, today wrote to the media, bitterly criticizing the regression of pharmaceutical policies by the Department of Health. Known for her calm and low-key personality, she unexpectedly expressed her agitation, stating that the government's wrongdoing and erroneous policies will lead to repercussions in 20 to 30 years. She emphasized that the separation of medical practice and pharmacy is a human rights issue, not a matter of profit.

Wang Huipo lamented that the more medication is used, the more nightmares will follow. She does not want her children, in their forties or fifties, to have to deal with the consequences of this government's misdeeds. To protect herself, she has set the only condition for her children's marriages: not to marry into families that are heavily reliant on medication.

Wang Huipo, former Director of the Department of Pharmaceutical Affairs at the Department of Health and currently a professor at the Institute of Natural Medicines at Chang Gung University, pointed out that drug reimbursement in our country accounts for 25% of the total health insurance expenditure, compared to 8-15% in OECD countries and only 15% in the United States.

She said that the amount of medication consumed by our citizens is six to seven times that of foreign countries, no wonder it damages the kidneys, making the prevalence of dialysis in our country one of the highest in the world.

Wang Huipo stated that the separation of medical practice and pharmacy is not an issue of profit for doctors or pharmacists, but a human rights issue. With non-transparent prescriptions, how can we know whether doctors prescribe medication for the patients, for themselves, or for pharmaceutical companies?

She said that the expertise of doctors lies in differential diagnosis, understanding what disease the patient has, while the expertise of pharmacists lies in the compatibility of the body with the medication. Without the separation of medical practice and pharmacy, pharmacists are hired by doctors, creating an employer-employee relationship, how dare they question the decisions of doctors?

Wang Huipo pointed out that without a government oversight mechanism, it will lead to professionals exploiting consumers without professional knowledge through policies. In Taiwan, the concept of using medication to prevent and mitigate risks is just a joke.

Wang Huipo is highly respected in the pharmaceutical community. Previously, the Executive Yuan hoped to make Taiwan the center for human trials in Asia, but Wang insisted on the principle of medication safety first, believing it absolutely must not happen, and ultimately resigned. She posted the news of her resignation on the wall of her office as an eternal reminder.
