[Reporter Qiu Xianming / Yuli Report]

Fifteen years ago, domestic angelica was sold for only 10 NTD per catty. This year, it has made a remarkable turnaround, with the price of angelica from Antong, Yuli Township, Hualien County, rising to 100 NTD per catty. Farmer Lin Tianzhou, who grows angelica, said the price is good, but unfortunately, there isn't that much angelica to sell!

The Antong mountain area in Yuli Township was once the region with the most angelica cultivation in the Huadong Valley. The hills were cleared to make way for angelica gardens, covering at least 50 hectares. The harvested angelica was collected by manufacturers, mostly used to produce health drinks similar to "Pocari Sweat."

At that time, the price was only 10 NTD per catty. Due to the poor price, coupled with population outflow and labor shortages, the cultivation area of angelica in the Antong mountain area decreased year by year. Now, most of the angelica gardens have been abandoned, with only small areas still cultivated, supplying products for stews or as ingredients for angelica duck.

Lin Tianzhou said it's truly a case of "30 years of fortune rotation." He never expected that this year, there would be specialists coming to the mountain area to purchase angelica, offering 100 NTD per catty. Unfortunately, there aren't many people growing angelica now, so there isn't more angelica to sell.

He mentioned that due to the dietary habits of the people, angelica duck sells very well in winter, leading to a high demand for angelica, which drives up the price. Traditionally, angelica is a medicinal herb, but people are continuously developing new food ingredients. Many new ways of consuming angelica have been discovered, such as using angelica leaves to fry eggs or stew pig's feet. Even tying the leaves into bundles can sell for 10 NTD.
