Xinhua News Agency, Fuzhou, August 12, 2005 (Reporters Zhang Guojun, Jing Yan)

At around 3 p.m. on the 12th, a male suspect surnamed Dai from Changle, Fuzhou, armed with a steel knife, broke into the "Guoyitang" affiliated with Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He repeatedly slashed Professor Dai, who was practicing medicine at the time, resulting in Professor Dai's death after being rushed to the hospital.

According to reporters, the victim and the suspect had a doctor-patient relationship. The motive behind the suspect's attack was dissatisfaction with the professor's failure to cure his illness over many years, which ultimately led to the tragic incident.

The victim was a 50-year-old professor of clinical foundations of traditional Chinese medicine at Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a recipient of special government allowances from the State Council.

Shortly after work began that afternoon, the suspect, Dai, arrived at the outpatient department on the second floor of "Guoyitang." He brandished a steel knife approximately 30 centimeters long and stabbed Professor Dai in the abdomen. Despite being wounded, Professor Dai managed to escape to the entrance on the first floor and hailed a taxi to the hospital. The suspect chased after the taxi and stabbed Professor Dai multiple times at the car door.

Currently, the suspect has been taken into custody by the police, and the case is under further investigation.

Recently (August 2005), Dai Chunfu, an expert at Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine who enjoyed special allowances from the State Council, was stabbed to death by a patient while consulting at the affiliated "Guoyitang" hospital. The faculty and students of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were shocked and saddened by the murder of Professor Dai. Interestingly, without knowing the details, online comments were filled with doubts and criticisms towards doctors. Relevant experts analyzed that this indicates the current doctor-patient conflict has become a relatively common social mentality, urgently requiring sufficient attention.

■ Incident: Medical expert met with misfortune in the consultation room

The victim, Dai Chunfu, 50 years old, was a professor and doctoral supervisor in clinical basics at Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and an expert enjoying special allowances from the State Council. The perpetrator had a doctor-patient relationship with him, having sought treatment for prostatitis which had not been cured over a long period.

According to witnesses, around 3 PM on the 12th, as Professor Dai entered the consultation room on the second floor of "Guoyitang," the perpetrator, holding a steel knife, stabbed him in the abdomen without a word. After being stabbed, Professor Dai quickly covered his wound and ran downstairs to stop a taxi, but as soon as he got into the car, the pursuing perpetrator pulled open the car door and stabbed him five or six more times. The taxi driver then sped away from "Guoyitang" and took Professor Dai to Fujian Second People's Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors reported that Professor Dai had been stabbed in vital areas such as the liver and died from excessive blood loss despite rescue efforts.

A security guard on duty at the entrance of "Guoyitang" saw the killer chasing Professor Dai and immediately called 110. Police officers nearby arrived at the scene as quickly as possible. After killing, the perpetrator did not leave but wandered around with the knife, and no bystanders dared to approach. After a few minutes of confrontation with the police, the perpetrator threw down the knife and was arrested, then taken away from the scene.

■ Cause: Patient's prolonged illness led to murderous intent

The criminal investigation team of Gulou Branch of Fuzhou Public Security Bureau conducted an overnight interrogation, and the case has been preliminarily clarified. According to Captain Zhang of the serious crime unit, the perpetrator, Dai Baogan, 28 years old, is from Jiangtian Town, Changle City, Fujian Province. On the afternoon of the 12th, the perpetrator waited at the entrance of "Guoyitang," and as soon as the victim appeared, he stabbed him. When the victim ran downstairs to escape by car, the pursuing perpetrator stabbed him several more times, ultimately causing the victim to die from excessive blood loss.

The perpetrator confessed that he had suffered from prostatitis for ten years and had sought treatment from Professor Dai. However, after taking the medicine prescribed by Professor Dai for over two years and spending a lot of money, his condition not only did not improve but also led to constipation, stomach disease, and other illnesses. Captain Zhang told reporters that the perpetrator might have attributed the failure to cure his illness to Professor Dai, thus developing a desire for revenge.
