Many elderly patients feel they can't lift their shoulders and seek treatment for frozen shoulder, only to later be diagnosed with heart disease. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician Chen Meijun pointed out yesterday that one patient complained of being unable to raise their left shoulder and came for treatment, with their shoulder covered in rashes from medicinal patches. However, upon examining the shoulder joint, it was found that the range of motion was normal. After diagnosis, she suspected the discomfort might be radiating from cardiovascular disease to the shoulder and back. Later, the patient was indeed found to have severe coronary artery blockage.
TCM physician Chen Meijun noted that if treatment had been directed solely toward frozen shoulder based on the patient's complaint, the condition could have been dangerously overlooked. She said the patient's pulse was slippery and rough. During the consultation, she informed the patient that discomfort from cardiovascular disease isn’t always concentrated in the chest or heart area and advised them to seek hospital examination. It was later confirmed to be coronary artery blockage, and the patient ultimately decided to have a stent placed.
Many people assume they have frozen shoulder when they can't lift or extend their arms, and some even wear medicinal patches all day. If physicians fail to carefully assess the shoulder joint's range of motion, misdiagnosis becomes a risk.
However, some patients experience the opposite—fearing they have heart disease when it’s actually an orthopedic issue. For example, many people worry about chest tightness or pain, fearing heart disease, only to later discover it’s due to upper back myofascial inflammation.
Heavy computer users, due to prolonged screen time, often trigger such discomfort. If it’s purely myofascial inflammation, TCM massage techniques can help relax and release the contracted muscles and tendons.
Modern TCM pulse diagnosis is typically performed at the radial artery. Physician Chen Meijun explained that the pulse can provide insights into blood flow and vascular health. Abnormal pulses may indicate circulatory issues. When irregularities are detected, further detailed examination is necessary.
TCM also frequently incorporates tongue diagnosis. For instance, a purplish-black sublingual vein suggests poor blood circulation. If accompanied by dizziness, hand numbness, severe headaches, uneven grip strength, or double vision, it may signal abnormal brain blood vessels.
