[Da Gong News 2006-1-10] She Jing, Director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China, stated on the 10th that over 5,800 patients in China are currently receiving traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for AIDS.
According to Xinhua News Agency in Beijing on January 10, She Jing, speaking at the National TCM Conference that opened on the 10th, mentioned that 11 provinces in China have initiated pilot projects for TCM treatment of AIDS, with 3,500 AIDS patients receiving TCM treatment. Additionally, 15 medical institutions in 19 other provinces are applying TCM to treat 2,305 AIDS patients.
"Practice has proven that TCM has a significant effect on improving common clinical symptoms of AIDS, treating certain opportunistic infections, reducing the side effects of antiviral drugs, and enhancing the quality of life for patients," She Jing said.
Furthermore, 15 research institutions in 9 provinces are conducting clinical research on TCM treatment for AIDS, observing a total of 868 patients.
Currently, the primary treatment for AIDS worldwide is the "cocktail" therapy. Internationally, antiretroviral drugs for AIDS have been developed up to the fourth line. The higher the drug level, the better the efficacy, but the cost is also considerable. Most AIDS patients in China can only access first-line drug treatments, with a few receiving second-line drugs. She Jing indicated that in 2006, the TCM treatment pilot project for AIDS will expand to 14 provinces. The "Clinical Technical Scheme for TCM Treatment of AIDS" will continue to be revised and improved, and studies on the intervention effects of TCM on AIDS patients and the evaluation of TCM treatment efficacy will also continue.
According to data provided at the conference, the volume of TCM services has significantly increased in recent years. In 2004, TCM hospitals provided over 220 million outpatient and emergency services, accounting for 17% of the national hospital outpatient and emergency services. A total of 448 TCM herb cultivation bases have been established nationwide, and there are 47 types of TCM preparations available.
