Reporter Yang Qingxiong reports:

"In most cases, so-called infertility actually refers to difficulty in conceiving!" said Huang Hongyuan, director of the Infertility Department at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Linkou Chang Gung Hospital. Since it is not completely impossible to conceive, the medical community can help people eliminate obstacles to pregnancy, with the ultimate method being artificial insemination.

Generally, if the ovaries can release normal eggs and the male has normal sperm, the couple can have intercourse on the woman's ovulation day, allowing the sperm and egg to meet and combine into a fertilized egg. After absorbing nutrients provided by the fallopian tube and developing into an early embryo, it enters the uterine cavity for implantation, and can successfully develop into a fetus. The absence of any of the above conditions will result in infertility.

Once a couple is infertile, doctors must first conduct various tests to identify the obstacles to conception. Since female factors account for about 50% to 60% of infertility cases, the tests focus more on the woman's ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix; of course, vaginal mucus is also included in the tests.

Huang Hongyuan said that only in very few cases will it be found that both partners' reproductive organs and physiological conditions are normal, yet they still cannot conceive. At this point, doctors will decide to use various artificial assisted reproductive technologies to help the couple solve the infertility problem. Most of the time, the carefully selected husband's sperm is injected into the wife's uterine cavity.

If this still does not solve the infertility, Huang Hongyuan said, doctors will further confirm whether there are issues with the sperm, eggs, fallopian tubes, or uterus. "Assuming everything is normal, then they will consider using in vitro fertilization, which involves developing the fertilized egg into an embryo outside the body before placing it back into the mother's uterus."

Huang Hongyuan said that the principle of solving infertility is to eliminate obstacles and assist natural conception as much as possible. There are many items that need to be checked and resolved. Only after all possible tests and assistance methods have been exhausted will artificial assisted reproductive technology be considered.
