British medical professionals and public health experts warn that a runny nose or green phlegm does not necessarily require antibiotic treatment, as overuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance.

Public Health England (PHE) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) pointed out that symptoms like a runny nose and coughing up green phlegm are often caused by viruses.

According to PHE research, 40% of people believe that green phlegm requires antibiotic treatment.

Dr. Maureen Baker said, "The idea that green phlegm or a runny nose means you need antibiotics is a common myth in society. Severe coughs and persistent runny noses are mostly caused by viral infections. Although they may make you feel miserable for weeks, the symptoms will improve on their own."

She added, "Antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasingly serious issue. By avoiding antibiotics for simple infections, we can help reduce the problem of resistance."

Dr. Clare Gerada, Chair of the RCGP, also stated that the overuse of antibiotics is a major public health concern, leading to resistance and ultimately rendering treatments ineffective.

She explained that green phlegm and nasal discharge are actually the result of the immune system producing proteins to fight infection.
