A man surnamed Huang bought chocolate toast to feed his sick 3-year-old son, but the child choked. Despite being rushed to the hospital by emergency services, the boy could not be saved.

Police investigation revealed that the 25-year-old Huang divorced his ex-wife, surnamed Chen, and was left to raise their 3-year-old son, who showed signs of developmental delays. In July of last year, Huang married a 25-year-old woman surnamed Kang, and they had a daughter. The couple rented a place in Sanchong District, New Taipei City, with Huang working as a security guard and Kang employed at a convenience store. Due to their busy schedules, they entrusted their newborn daughter to Kang’s parents and relied on relatives and friends to help care for their 3-year-old son.

At around 7 a.m. yesterday, Kang returned to her parents' home in Xinzhuang to look after their daughter, while Huang took leave to stay home with their son, who had tonsillitis. Huang bought chocolate toast from a nearby breakfast shop and fed his son bite by bite, alternating with sips of water. However, after stepping away briefly to use the restroom, he returned to find his son choking and struggling on the floor. Huang attempted to clear his son’s throat with his fingers before carrying the boy downstairs to call for help. Despite emergency medical assistance, the child could not be revived. The prosecutor will conduct an autopsy today to determine if there was any negligence leading to death.

Emergency responders reminded the public that for children over 1 year old or adults who are choking, the "Heimlich maneuver" can be used to dislodge the obstruction. The rescuer should stand behind the victim, place a fist (thumb side in) against the middle of the abdomen between the navel and the xiphoid process (the lower edge between the ribs), cover the fist with the other hand, and perform quick, upward thrusts five times until the obstruction is expelled and the victim can breathe again.
