Many women fear the pain of childbirth and opt for a cesarean section, but doctors warn that newborns delivered via cesarean section are nearly three times more likely to die before reaching one month of age compared to those born naturally.
American experts analyzed 5.76 million live births and nearly 12,000 neonatal deaths from 1998 to 2001, finding that many infant deaths occurred within the first 28 days after birth.
The survey revealed that among low-risk pregnant women who chose cesarean sections, there were 1.77 deaths per 1,000 infants, whereas the mortality rate for naturally delivered infants was only 0.62 per 1,000.
Dr. MacDorman from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who led the study, pointed out that after considering factors such as socioeconomic status and childbirth risks, cesarean sections indeed increase the risk of early infant death. He advised women to opt for natural childbirth unless absolutely necessary.
Experts believe that the natural childbirth process helps expel some fluids from the lungs and releases hormones that promote lung function. In contrast, cesarean sections may cause accidental injuries to the infant during the procedure or delay the mother's breastfeeding, both of which are detrimental to the infant's health.
