Recent research suggests that tumors not only release tiny cells called "seeds" that spread throughout the body but also re-seed themselves. This finding may help explain why tumors recur after being removed.

Researchers reported in the scientific journal *Cell* that this discovery could also aid in developing new drugs to combat cancer spread or metastasis.

Joan Massague from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York said, "Tumor cells circulating in the body can also return to the original tumor, a process we call tumor self-seeding."

"Now we’ve found that tumors bring back their most unruly offspring, infusing themselves with the most aggressive metastatic cells, allowing them to grow faster and stronger."

"We believe that in some cases, certain treatments may cause inflamed tissues to become a breeding ground, providing a refuge for cells that have escaped and temporarily hidden in the bone marrow."

"These cells may re-enter the circulatory system weeks or months after surgery, settling in these tissues through self-seeding and forming new tumors."

Researchers are developing cancer vaccines that can better control the immune system to attack cancer cells more effectively. This study indicates the need to weaken certain mechanisms of the immune system.
