Greek researchers say that marriage is a cause of obesity.

Researchers from two Greek universities interviewed 17,000 couples. According to statistics, those in marital relationships were more likely to be obese than those who were cohabiting. The researchers noted that further analysis revealed that married couples exercised less and had less frequent sexual activity.

The University of Thessaloniki and the University of Ioannina in Greece interviewed over 10,000 couples aged 20 to 70. The statistics showed that most married individuals had large waistlines.

The researchers explained that seeking comfort and avoiding effort is human nature. Before marriage, people exercise and maintain a decent figure to attract the opposite sex. After marriage, with no urgency to impress potential partners, they naturally revert to their true selves—indulging in laziness and overeating, which leads to weight gain.

The study also found that if one spouse starts dieting and exercising more, the other is likely to follow suit. Therefore, the researchers encourage at least one partner in a marriage to take the lead in losing weight, fostering a family culture of fitness and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
