The coughing, runny nose, or sneezing reactions that allergy sufferers dislike the most—according to the latest research from Yale University—actually help the body detoxify. However, it’s not about literally "expelling toxins." Instead, when exposed to irritants or environmental compounds, the body "naturally" expels them through allergic reactions, preventing them from lingering inside. Although allergies still require medication for control, this study might offer some psychological comfort to patients.
Frequent sneezing, coughing, and runny noses—allergies are always annoying, and most would rather avoid them. But a new U.S. study suggests these "symptoms" might actually help detoxify the body!
Dr. Tsao Cheng-ting from Cathay General Hospital’s Allergy and Immunology Department explains: "Even the aroma of coffee can trigger sneezing or coughing in some patients. This is because, to them, it’s a foreign substance. These aren’t toxins per se, but rather irritants that the body naturally expels through these reactions."
Can coughing alone really expel all toxins from the body? Not necessarily. In the past, experts believed allergic reactions were the body’s natural mechanism to eliminate harmful substances. But if the body reacts to seemingly harmless things like pollen or peanuts with a "false immune response," the latest research suggests it’s still harmless because the body "naturally" expels inhaled irritants—like strong odors or environmental compounds from factory emissions—through allergic reactions.
Dr. Tsao adds: "People should actually see this as a beneficial protective measure for the body. It helps block irritants or so-called foreign substances from invading us."
In other words, allergy symptoms are the body’s protective mechanism. Though they may affect quality of life, current allergy treatments only relieve symptoms without addressing the root cause. But the idea that "sneezing can detoxify" from this new study might at least offer some comfort to sufferers.
