Consuming too many health supplements may not protect your health but instead cause problems! A female direct sales agent in her 50s from Keelung City had been taking various health supplements sold by her company daily for years. Recently, she suddenly developed drug-induced hepatitis and unfortunately passed away. Doctors believe this may be related to her excessive intake of health supplements, leading to potential "interactions."

Many people hold the belief that "if you're not sick, supplements will strengthen your body—the more, the better." As a result, they swallow colorful pills of all kinds. However, this practice has proven fatal. A "diamond-level" female direct sales agent recently developed jaundice and suffered rapid liver failure, losing all blood clotting function. She passed away ten days after being hospitalized.

Doctors found that the woman had no history of liver disease and was not taking any other medications. However, she had been consuming five types of health supplements, including lecithin, which she sold, for many years. It is suspected that interactions between these supplements may have played a role, though her personal constitution could also have been a factor.

Regarding this, Ho Yi-Cheng, Deputy Director of Rongxin Clinic and Head of Family Medicine at Shutian Clinic, once said, "Patients with conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high blood sugar sometimes buy nutritional supplements on their own. Therefore, drug interactions like these are not uncommon in clinical practice."

Health supplements can also clash with chronic medications. For example, the anticoagulant Warfarin should not be taken with supplements like ginkgo biloba, and the cholesterol-lowering drug Statin should not be combined with the currently popular red yeast rice. The public’s belief that health supplements can strengthen the body when not sick really needs to change to avoid potential health risks. (News source: ETTV News)
