For a long time, fish oil has been regarded as a health food that can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. However, animal experiments conducted by Michigan State University in the U.S. found that consuming fish oil supplements may cause severe colon inflammation and increase the risk of colorectal cancer. When high doses of fish oil are consumed during severe intestinal inflammation, tumors can develop in as little as four weeks. Researchers warn that patients with gastrointestinal inflammation should control their fish oil intake.

This study was published in this month's "Cancer Research" journal. The lead researcher, nutritionist Jenifer Fenton from Michigan State University, stated that evidence suggests patients with long-term gastrointestinal inflammation should limit their intake of DHA-rich fish oil. In the mouse experiments, when mice were fed large amounts of fish oil, they ultimately developed fatal late-stage colorectal cancer. After consuming high doses of fish oil, the mice experienced worsened intestinal inflammation, and tumors formed within just four weeks.

The study also found that not only high doses of DHA can exacerbate cancer, but even lower doses can worsen the condition. Laboratory mice most commonly developed inflammatory bowel disease, and inflammation stimulates the growth of many cancers, including colorectal cancer.

In fact, DHA contains some anti-inflammatory substances, so the researchers were greatly surprised by the results. Fenton mentioned that they initially believed feeding mice DHA-rich fish oil would help reduce cancer risk, but the results turned out to be the opposite. These mice lacked a robust immune response to bacteria, leading to the development of tumors in the colon.

Fenton pointed out that people do not need to deliberately avoid fish oil, but it is best to follow recommended guidelines when consuming it. Any nutrient taken in excess can harm health and even increase cancer risk. Maintaining a normal, balanced diet can provide sufficient DHA.
