People often consume cordyceps for winter nourishment, but the market price of cordyceps is shockingly high. Many opt for capsules available at convenience stores, costing less than NT$7 per pill, which claim to have the same effects as cordyceps. However, Taiwan Sugar Corporation's cordyceps mycelium has now been exposed as counterfeit, and the regulatory authority, the Department of Health, has been accused of turning a blind eye to Taiwan Sugar's deception of consumers. On the 29th, Taiwan Sugar presented test reports to vehemently deny the allegations.
Taiwan Sugar's cordyceps mycelium, sold in convenience stores, comes in bottles of 80 capsules priced at NT$550 and is a popular choice for winter supplementation, bringing in over NT$30 million annually for the company. However, legislators have now exposed that the cordyceps mycelium is entirely fake.
Aside from the shockingly low price, legislator Huang Wei-zhe also presented the Department of Health's 2009 meeting minutes, which clearly state that the strain for cordyceps must be *Hirsutella sinensis*. Food products using cordyceps mycelium must provide identification proof of *Hirsutella sinensis*. Yet, Taiwan Sugar's product contains *Tolypocladium sinense* strain 36421. Taiwan Sugar, however, insists it is innocent.
Is the state-owned enterprise deceiving consumers for profit, and is the Department of Health complicit by failing to report this?
Both the Department of Health and Taiwan Sugar have defended themselves, stating that under current regulations, Taiwan Sugar's product is not counterfeit. However, if consumers truly wish to purchase cordyceps, they should consider the price-to-efficacy ratio and make an informed choice.
