The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, appointed and supported by the U.S. government, stated today that vitamin E and beta-carotene are ineffective in preventing heart disease or cancer.

Task Force Chair Virginia Moyer told Reuters: "Because so many people spend large sums of money on multivitamins, believing it benefits their health, we really need research to examine whether this is actually the case."

Based on a review of numerous scientific studies, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found that vitamin E does not help prevent heart disease or cancer, while beta-carotene may even be harmful.

Co-chair Michael LeFevre said: "Beta-carotene may be harmful because it could increase the risk of lung cancer in people already at high risk for the disease."

The Task Force stated that for other vitamins, whether single or combined in multivitamins, there is insufficient evidence to show they help prevent heart disease or cancer.

However, some groups should take specific supplements.

Pregnant women should take folic acid as advised by their doctors, and older adults prone to falls should take vitamin D to strengthen bone health.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force noted that as long as people consume sufficient fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and seafood, most individuals do not need additional vitamin supplements.

The Task Force is an independent panel of medical experts from across the U.S. These recommendations apply to healthy adults without diseases and were published today in the *Annals of Internal Medicine*.
