Since 2005, Hou Yaodong, director of orthopedics at the National Armed Forces Hsinchu Regional Hospital, has been suspected of requiring patients to pay out-of-pocket for hip replacement surgeries and later falsifying patient medical records to claim reimbursement from the National Health Insurance Bureau. Preliminary estimates indicate fraudulent claims of at least NT$500,000, involving over 70 cases of illegal evidence. Prosecutors are still conducting overnight interrogations. If there is a risk of witness tampering, they may apply to the court for the detention of Hou Yaodong and eight others.
