Located in the remote mountains of Taiwan, Taitung is not a densely populated area. However, one particular road has seen a total of 125 million NTD spent on renovations over the past decade, from asphalt repairs to road redesign projects, with construction never stopping. Council members have criticized this as a waste of money, but when the media inquired with the local city office, the response was that it was "routine maintenance, meeting standards."

While excavators dig and dump trucks unload soil, the road reconstruction project remains unfinished. Yet, nearby, a large drainage ditch is about to undergo construction for a sewage pipeline installation, sparking backlash from council members and residents.

Nanjing Road spans 400 meters in length and 50 meters in width—not particularly long—but the spending has been top-tier. Since 2000, the road has undergone continuous renovations, starting with 40 million NTD spent to replace asphalt with hollow bricks. Then, last year, a major redesign was implemented, converting it into a two-way road, adding roadside parking spaces, and rebuilding sidewalks. This two-phase project cost another 25 million NTD. Now, a 60 million NTD sewage pipeline project and an urban-rural landscape improvement plan are in the works. In total, Nanjing Road has seen at least 125 million NTD spent on reconstruction projects alone.

Lin Huimei, Director of the Taitung Public Works Department, emphasized that aging infrastructure naturally requires regular maintenance. Additionally, the open space beside Nanjing Road is Taitung’s primary venue for events. To provide a comfortable environment for the public, additional facilities were added, urging everyone not to overinterpret the situation. (News Source: ETTV Reporters Wu Yilin and Cai Wanru)
