Can stomach cancer still metastasize after being controlled? Dr. Lin Guanqun from the Department of Thoracic Medicine at Chiayi Hospital encountered such a case. A 51-year-old man had surgery and chemotherapy for stomach cancer at a medical center two years ago, and the cancer was considered cured. However, three months ago, he began coughing and experiencing shortness of breath. After being hospitalized at Chiayi Hospital for examination, it was discovered that he had cancer again. A biopsy confirmed it was a metastasis of stomach cancer, which is quite rare.

Dr. Lin Guanqun from the Department of Thoracic Medicine at Chiayi Hospital explained that cancer patients usually experience metastasis when their condition worsens. However, Chiayi Hospital discovered an unusual case where stomach cancer cells metastasized to the lungs two years after the stomach cancer was cured. The X-ray showed significant bilateral lung infiltration.

The 51-year-old male stomach cancer patient initially exhibited symptoms similar to pneumonia, but treatment at another hospital showed no improvement. He was then transferred to Chiayi Hospital for hospitalization. During his stay, the patient experienced difficulty breathing, could not lie flat to sleep, and had severe low blood oxygen levels. Dr. Lin strongly suspected other underlying conditions. An endoscopy confirmed no recurrence of stomach cancer, but a bronchoscopy and pathological biopsy revealed lung metastasis, confirming that the stomach cancer had spread to the lungs. The patient was immediately referred back to the medical center for treatment.

Dr. Lin pointed out that when the patient was treated for stomach cancer at the medical center, he underwent both surgical resection and chemotherapy, and the stomach cancer was considered cured. However, the cancer cells still metastasized to the lungs, presenting as pneumonia symptoms, which is extremely rare. He advised the public that if pneumonia recurs or a cough persists for more than three weeks, they should be especially cautious and seek detailed examinations at a major hospital. Those with a history of cancer should be particularly vigilant about the possibility of lung cancer.

According to the latest statistics from the Department of Health, cancer is the leading cause of death among Taiwanese, with lung cancer being the most fatal. Dr. Lin emphasized that people should pay more attention to their lung health. Those aged 40 and above should undergo a chest X-ray at least once a year to detect cancer or tuberculosis early, ensuring timely treatment and safeguarding their lives.
