Young women with a family history or genetic predisposition to breast cancer are already at high risk. Dutch researchers suggest that low-dose mammography and chest X-rays may further increase this risk.
The researchers noted that high-risk women, especially those under 30, may want to consider alternatives such as MRI scans, which do not involve radiation exposure.
Marijke Jansen-van der Weide from the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands said, "Our findings indicate that low-dose radiation increases the risk of breast cancer in high-risk young women. Caution is necessary to ensure safety."
Presenting the research at the Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago, van der Weide stated in a phone interview, "I advise those under 30 to be cautious with radiation and preferably consider other methods."
Her study analyzed data from six published reports involving 12,000 high-risk women in Europe and the U.S.
The research team found that among 8,500 women who had been exposed to radiation from chest or breast X-rays before age 20 or had undergone at least five X-ray exams, their likelihood of developing breast cancer was 2.5 times higher than that of other high-risk women who had not been exposed to X-rays.
