Scientists have discovered that Mozart’s music has the effect of calming premature babies and reducing their activity levels, thereby aiding in weight gain, whereas Beethoven and Bach do not have the same effect. Researchers believe this is due to the frequent repetitive melodies in Mozart’s music. The UK’s Daily Telegraph reported that this finding suggests playing Mozart’s music could reduce the hospitalization time for premature babies, saving millions of pounds in public funds.

The report noted that researchers played 30 minutes of Mozart’s music for premature babies and then compared the infants’ energy expenditure before and after listening. The results showed that energy consumption decreased after listening to the music, which would help them gain weight faster. A primary method of treating premature babies is to increase their weight so they can be discharged home.

Dr. Mandel from Tel Aviv University in Israel pointed out that while it is not yet fully understood how Mozart’s music affects premature babies, it clearly makes them calmer and less agitated. He said, “The repetitive melodies in Mozart’s music may influence the organizational centers of the cerebral cortex. Unlike Beethoven, Bach, or Bartók, Mozart’s music has highly repetitive melodies, which might be the musical explanation. However, more research is needed for a scientific explanation.”
