World Enters 'Mini Ice Age'

According to a report from the online edition of Britain's *Daily Mail* on the 10th: A group of authoritative climate scientists believe that the recent severe winter affecting much of the Northern Hemisphere may only be the beginning of a global cooling trend, which could last for 20 to 30 years, forming a mini "ice age."

Their predictions, based on the analysis of natural cycles in ocean temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic, strongly challenge some of the most staunchly defended beliefs in the global warming theory, such as "the Arctic will be completely ice-free by 2013."

Data from the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center show that global summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles since 2007, a rise of 26%, a fact even the most ardent proponents of global warming cannot dispute.

**Ocean Cycles of Warming and Cooling**

Mojib Latif, leading a research team at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Kiel in Germany, has developed a new method to measure ocean temperatures at depths of 3,000 feet, where cooling and warming cycles begin.

Their research indicates that the main cause of warming lies in the ocean cycles being in a "warm mode" rather than the current "cold mode." This directly challenges the widespread belief that "the Earth is on the brink of an irreversible catastrophe."

In a paper published in 2008, Latif and his colleagues predicted a new "cooling" trend and reiterated this warning at a United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting in Geneva last September.

Speaking to the *Sunday Mail* last night, he said: "A significant part of the warming we experienced from 1980 to 2000, and even earlier in the 20th century, was due to these cycles—perhaps as much as 50%.

"Now they have reversed, so the likelihood of winters like the current one has increased. Summers may also become cooler, and these conditions could persist for at least 20 years.

"We may see a halt in the severe retreat of glaciers and sea ice. Global warming has stopped, and it might even get a bit colder."

**Challenging the "Global Warming Theory"**

Latif’s predictions shake the foundations of standard climate computer models, which assert that the Earth’s warming since 1900 is entirely due to human greenhouse gas emissions and that this trend will continue as long as CO₂ levels rise.

The two major political parties in the UK have long insisted that the world faces disaster unless carbon emissions are drastically reduced. Last week, as Britain endured severe cold, Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband still asserted in Parliament that the case for global warming was "settled."

Moreover, despite freezing conditions in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America last week, traditionalists insist that the "cooling" is merely a "fluctuation" with no long-term significance. The BBC assured viewers that the current cold spell is short-term and unrelated to the still "warming climate."
