British scientists say that men have weaker immune systems primarily to increase fertility.
Professor Knapp, a biologist at the University of Cambridge, explains that the immune system requires a large amount of proteins and cells, as does the reproductive system. In the dilemma of choosing between two conflicting needs, evolution has led men to sacrifice their immune systems in favor of their reproductive systems.
Knapp says that due to their weaker immune systems, men are more susceptible to infections. Their reactions to a cold may resemble the flu, and a headache might feel like a migraine, making it impossible to work. As a result, men take more sick leave than women.
Immunologist Malloy from the University of Oxford also supports this theory. He adds that women’s higher pain tolerance is also for the purpose of perpetuating life. Malloy argues that if women couldn’t endure pain, how could they withstand the challenges of menstrual cramps and childbirth?
