The acne bacterium, which may cause small pimples, can also lead to thyroid abscesses that are potentially fatal. According to ETtoday News, Taiwan has reported its first case, also the second globally, where a man nearly lost his life due to a thyroid abscess that compressed his trachea.

Although pimples on the face are not scary, the acne bacterium that causes them can be deadly if it invades the body. In this case, a middle-aged man in Taiwan had a thyroid cyst invaded by the acne bacterium, resulting in an abscess as large as an egg. This caused his neck to swell at least 4 cm more than normal, nearly compressing his trachea and threatening his life.

Dr. Chen Chun-sen from Taipei Zhongxiao Hospital stated that besides the original cyst becoming larger, there was significant edema under the entire epidermis. The next step was to extract fluid from the thyroid abscess for testing.

After emergency treatment with antibiotics, the patient's life was saved. It was surprising to the doctors that the acne bacterium, which usually infects the skin surface, had invaded the thyroid. This is the first case in Taiwan and the second globally. The patient had no acne on his face and a normal immune system, so the source of the acne bacterium invasion remains unknown.

Doctors warn that cysts are conducive to bacterial growth, and if infected by the acne bacterium, they can worsen into abscesses with a mortality rate as high as 30%. They advise the public not to take benign thyroid cysts lightly and to seek medical treatment promptly if the cyst is larger than 1 cm.
