Update Date: "2011/02/19 06:30" Apple Daily [Reporter Luo Guofu / New Taipei City]

A female patient sought treatment for shoulder and neck pain from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner but ended up having her pants pulled down for acupuncture on her buttocks! A woman in New Taipei City had been receiving long-term treatment for shoulder, neck, and lower back pain at "Jianhong TCM Clinic." Recently, when she went to the clinic for shoulder and neck treatment, the TCM doctor pulled down her pants and underwear to her thighs to perform acupuncture on her buttocks and even asked her to spread her legs. Terrified, she said, "Stop it." Since no nurse was present during the treatment, the police have referred the doctor to prosecutors for violating the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act.

Mrs. Wang (35) disclosed to Apple Daily yesterday that she had been receiving treatment for shoulder, neck, and lower back pain at Jianhong TCM Clinic on Zhongyang Road in Xindian District for over two years. On Wednesday evening around 6 p.m., her husband (45) drove her to the clinic for a follow-up visit. A new TCM doctor, surnamed Li, treated her. She told the doctor about her shoulder and neck pain, and the doctor said he would perform acupuncture, instructing her to lie face down on the treatment bed. Unexpectedly, she was sexually harassed.

Mrs. Wang said she always wore casual sportswear to her appointments. When the doctor asked her to lie face down, she wondered why shoulder and neck pain required such a position but complied out of trust in the clinic.

**Broke down crying in the car**

Next, the doctor pulled down her pants and underwear to her thighs. Before she could react, a needle was inserted into her buttocks. The doctor even tried to pull her pants down to her knees and asked her to spread her legs. Sensing something was wrong, she quickly stopped him, saying, "Don’t do this." The doctor then moved to treat a male patient on the next bed. Two minutes later, he removed the needle and left. Shaken, she put her clothes back on and broke down crying in her husband’s car.

**No female nurse present**

Mr. Wang was furious upon hearing his wife’s ordeal and stormed into the clinic to confront Dr. Li. The doctor insisted that pulling down the pants was a necessary part of the treatment. When Mr. Wang questioned why no female nurse was present, the doctor replied, "Our clinic doesn’t have female nurses, only the receptionist." Mr. Wang then reported the incident to the police, who later referred Dr. Li for violating the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act.

In response, the director of Jianhong TCM Clinic stated that Dr. Li was not a regular employee of the clinic but had been called in to cover for another doctor who was on leave. Regarding the medical dispute between the doctor and the patient, the director declined to comment as the case was already under judicial review.

When Apple Daily questioned why no female nurse was present during the treatment, the director explained that this was common in TCM clinics. He added that the treatment rooms had semi-open curtains, making it impossible for the doctor to behave inappropriately toward female patients.
