Chlorpyrifos is a highly toxic chemical pesticide banned in many countries. In Taiwan, it is also classified as a controlled substance, requiring a license for purchase. However, Eastern News reporters discovered that this pesticide is readily available at ordinary agricultural supply stores.

A quick spray of this insecticide can leave ants or cockroaches half-dead. This is Chlorpyrifos, commonly used by professional pest control companies. Inhaling its fumes can cause severe nerve damage, which is why it is listed as a controlled substance, supposedly requiring a pharmacist's license to purchase. Yet, in reality, regulations are lax, and it can easily be bought on the market.

Despite its known toxicity, some hotel operators still use Chlorpyrifos for disinfection due to its low cost. A 600ml bottle costs NT$1,250, and when diluted, it can produce 500 bottles of insecticide—effectively reducing the cost to just NT$25 per bottle, far cheaper than standard NT$60 insecticides. Hiring a pest control company for disinfection, on the other hand, can cost tens of thousands per session.

This has led to reports of a guest's death at a hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand, suspected to be caused by Chlorpyrifos disinfection. The insecticide contains organophosphates, and among all organophosphate-based pesticides, Chlorpyrifos is the most toxic. It is typically used outdoors for large-scale termite or flea extermination. However, when used indoors, its fumes linger, posing serious inhalation risks.

Due to its high toxicity, proper use requires masks and protective clothing. Simply being exposed to the air can endanger human health.
