International Center/Comprehensive Report
Taiwan's food industry is embroiled in a plasticizer storm. According to a research report, several American doctors are urging children and teenagers to avoid energy drinks. They point out that energy drinks contain a mix of vitamins, herbal extracts, and other ingredients that may cause unknown side effects.
Dr. Holly Benjamin from the American Academy of Pediatrics, who authored the report, stated, "Children absolutely do not need energy drinks. They contain caffeine and other stimulants with no nutritional value, so there's simply no need for them."
Benjamin noted that frequent consumption of such beverages could burden the body. "You wouldn't want to place a burden on a body that's still developing," she said. While there aren't many documented cases of these drinks directly harming health, the stimulants they contain can disrupt heart rhythms and, in very rare cases, may lead to sudden health episodes. Moreover, children are more susceptible to the effects of energy drink ingredients than adults.
This recommendation follows a national debate on energy drinks, with experts expressing concerns about potential side effects. Researchers conducted a detailed review of previous studies and reports on energy and sports drinks before publishing their findings in the journal *Pediatrics*.
