Do you love the fresh scent of freshly washed clothes? Be careful—you might be inhaling carcinogens! A recent U.S. study found that using scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners releases multiple compounds when clothes are dried, including carcinogens like acetaldehyde and benzene. Experts recommend placing the dryer outside to allow the fragrances to dissipate, reducing the risk.

The washing machine rumbles, leaving clothes smelling fresh, but homemakers should take note—before doing laundry, keep your eyes open. If you use scented detergents or fabric softeners, you might be exposed to cancer-causing substances.

A resident said, "Many things carry risks—it feels like there's always something new." Another resident added, "The release of chemical agents poses a cancer risk, of course that’s scary."

The latest U.S. research found that using scented laundry detergents releases carcinogens like acetaldehyde and benzene when drying clothes. Acetaldehyde can irritate the eyes, while excessive inhalation of benzene may lead to reproductive cell mutations, posing significant risks to pregnant women and children.

Dr. Lin Jie-liang, Director of Toxicology, said, "When drying clothes, these volatile organic solvents are released. Worse, among these 20-plus volatile organic solvents, some are potential carcinogens or confirmed carcinogens."

Doctors advise choosing laundry detergents or fabric softeners with as little fragrance as possible. It’s also best to place the dryer outside to let the scents disperse, minimizing the risk.
