A 36-year-old hairdresser in Changhua sought medical attention after not having her period for six months. Upon examination, doctors discovered she was already experiencing menopause. Tsai Hung-te, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Changhua Christian Hospital, explained that the patient's follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level was 72, whereas the normal range is below 10. Typically, levels exceeding 35 indicate menopause.

But why would menopause occur at just 36 years old? Tsai further elaborated that foreign studies have shown long-term exposure to chemical agents among hairdressers may lead to premature ovarian failure. Volatile hair dyes, in particular, have been linked to infertility, increasing the risk of premature ovarian failure by 1.9 times compared to women in other professions.

While it remains unconfirmed whether menopause is directly related to premature ovarian failure—requiring further research—clinically, there have been cases of infertility in hairdressers as young as 28. Blood tests revealed severely diminished ovarian function, necessitating reliance on in vitro fertilization (IVF) for successful pregnancy—a serious concern.

To minimize harm from volatile hair dyes, hairdressers should wear masks while working. Tsai reassured that hairdressers need not be overly worried, as premature ovarian failure has not been definitively proven. However, volatile dyes may increase infertility risks. Pregnant hairdressers should avoid prolonged standing at work to reduce the chances of premature birth or miscarriage.
