Newtalk 2013.06.11 Chen Guan-Ting/New Taipei Report

The New Taipei City Department of Health today (11th) announced the test results for maleic acid in starch-based raw materials and products from source factories and retail markets within its jurisdiction. As of June 10, a total of 658 samples were tested, with 653 completed. Two additional products were found to contain maleic acid, bringing the total to 10, with a cumulative compliance rate of 98.5%.

Lin Guan-Zhen, head of the Food and Drug Administration Section of the Health Bureau, stated that as of June 10, 355 starch-based raw material samples had been tested, with 352 completed and five found non-compliant. Additionally, 303 retail product samples were tested, with 301 completed and five non-compliant. The latest tests revealed that "Yali Xiang Food Co., Ltd.'s sweet potato starch (sourced from Maoli Starch Co., Ltd. in Shanhua District, Tainan)" contained 34.6 ppm of maleic acid, and "Ririchun Convenience Store's boba pearls (sourced from Jianchang Flour Mill in Xiluo Township, Yunlin County)" contained 17.6 ppm of maleic acid.

Lin Guan-Zhen said that the businesses have been ordered to immediately recall 60 kg of non-compliant raw materials and 4,027.3 kg of non-compliant products. The case has been referred to the health bureaus of the source locations for further investigation. If confirmed, violators may face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$6 million under Article 11 of the Food Sanitation Management Act.

Furthermore, Lin Guan-Zhen noted that since June 1, the department has been conducting special inspections in line with the Executive Yuan's Department of Health project to verify test certificates for eight major food categories. As of June 10, 4,539 vendors in traditional markets, shops, and night markets were inspected, with 4,485 compliant (a 99.5% compliance rate) and 22 non-compliant. The Health Bureau immediately ordered the removal and suspension of sales of the non-compliant products, with 32 samples taken for testing. Among these, 31 were compliant, while the one non-compliant product was "Ririchun Convenience Store's boba pearls."
