Another case of "sodium copper chlorophyllin" in major food brands has surfaced! The Taoyuan County Health Bureau pointed out on the 11th that the "Uni-President Bio-Tech Tomorrow's Leaf Vitality Soup" product contained sodium copper chlorophyllin, but its packaging was labeled as "natural chlorophyll," clearly a labeling discrepancy. The company was fined NT$200,000 for violating the Food Sanitation Management Act.
**Labeling Discrepancy Leads to NT$200,000 Fine**
To trace the flow of sodium copper chlorophyllin imported by Tong Yuan, inspectors from the Taoyuan County Health Bureau visited Uni-President Bio-Tech Development Co., Ltd. in Zhongli Industrial Park. They unexpectedly discovered that the company's "Uni-President Bio-Tech Tomorrow's Leaf Vitality Soup" product used sodium copper chlorophyllin while its packaging was labeled as "natural chlorophyll."
Liu Liwen, head of the Food and Drug Management Division of the Taoyuan County Health Bureau, stated that the vitality soup, packaged in 30-gram red portions and marketed as an "energy source and vitality supplement," was processed using freeze-drying and low-temperature grinding to preserve the rich nutrients of tomorrow's leaf. However, it was found to have labeling discrepancies and was fined. Upon learning of the issue, the company immediately removed all products from online and physical store shelves and halted sales. Whether this involved intentional mislabeling is still under investigation by the health bureau.
**Uni-President Claims Victim Status, Initiates Full Recall**
Uni-President Bio-Tech stated that when purchasing the product from Tong Yuan, the goods were labeled as "natural chlorophyll," and the company itself was a victim. They have now initiated a full recall.
Apart from Tong Yuan supplying sodium copper chlorophyllin to Uni-President Bio-Tech, the Chiayi County Health Bureau inspected Far East Trust International Enterprise Co., Ltd., the importer of sodium copper chlorophyllin, on the 11th. The owner, surnamed Su, reported importing a total of 60 kilograms, with 51 kilograms sold to Uni-President Enterprise headquarters, 1 kilogram used for research and development, and 8 kilograms remaining in inventory. The company has pledged that none of the product was supplied to other manufacturers or used for other purposes.
**Upstream Supplier Asserts No Supply to Others**
The Chiayi County Health Bureau stated that after receiving a report from the Taoyuan County Health Bureau, they sent personnel to Far East Trust International Enterprise Co., Ltd. in Xingang Township to investigate. Upon reviewing shipping documents, they confirmed that the company was a food additive supplier and had only imported 60 kilograms over the past two years.
The owner, surnamed Su, explained that the company imported 20 kilograms on November 18 last year and another 40 kilograms on January 20 this year, with 51 kilograms shipped to Uni-President Enterprise headquarters. The purpose of Uni-President's purchase of sodium copper chlorophyllin was not disclosed. The Chiayi County Health Bureau has reported the inspection results to the Taoyuan County Health Bureau and the Southern Regional Management Center of the Food and Drug Administration under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
