Parents, take note: Young children exposed to environments with plastic toys, plastic flooring, and similar items may develop allergic tendencies! A research team from National Taiwan University Hospital discovered that 2-year-olds who come into contact with plasticizer-containing products, such as plastic toys or PVC flooring, face a 2.5 times higher risk of developing allergies and allergic diseases, making them more susceptible to atopic dermatitis. These findings have been published in the international academic journal *Environment International*.

The research team at National Taiwan University Hospital analyzed urine samples from 483 pairs of infants and mothers born in medical centers, hospitals, and clinics in the Taipei area between 2004 and 2005. The study included 161 late-pregnancy groups, 219 groups of 2-year-old children, and 192 groups of 5-year-old children to examine the correlation between serum immunoglobulin IgE and atopic dermatitis. The results showed that the levels of phthalate metabolites in the urine of 2-year-olds were higher than those in pregnant women and 5-year-old children.

Chen Bao-zhong, Director of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital, pointed out that higher concentrations of MEHP (mono-ethylhexyl phthalate, a metabolite of DEHP) in the urine of 2-year-old boys were associated with higher serum IgE levels. Additionally, higher levels of MBzP (monobenzyl phthalate, a metabolite of the plasticizer BBzP, or butyl benzyl phthalate) in the urine of 2-year-olds indicated an increased risk of developing atopic dermatitis.

Chen Bao-zhong emphasized that young children’s organ systems are still developing, making them particularly vulnerable to the effects of plasticizers. Exposure to plastic toys, plastic products, and PVC flooring at the age of 2 may increase the risk of allergies and allergic diseases. He recommended minimizing infants’ and young children’s exposure to these materials to reduce the likelihood of developing allergic conditions.
