United Daily News Reporter Xiao Yajuan / Pingtung Report November 4, 2014

"My daughter has discharge on her underwear and keeps scratching," said a mother in Pingtung County who noticed a large amount of yellowish vaginal discharge on her daughter's underwear. Worried, she nervously took her kindergarten-aged daughter to a gynecologist for examination. Dr. Li Boning, a gynecologist at Pingtung Anhe Hospital, explained that the patient's late nights, excessive consumption of cold drinks, and sugary beverages led to vaginitis combined with vulvitis. He reminded parents to pay more attention to their children's lifestyle habits to prevent infections.

The girl's mother discovered abnormal discharge—commonly known as leukorrhea—on her daughter's underwear while doing laundry. She even occasionally saw ants crawling on the unwashed underwear. Her daughter also complained of genital itching and frequently scratched, which alarmed the mother and prompted the visit to the gynecologist.

Dr. Li Boning stated that clinically, symptoms like these can occur in girls from kindergarten to high school age who have not been sexually active, often due to lifestyle habits. The young girl, like many high school students, had poor sleep habits, consumed too many sugary drinks, and frequently ate ice-based treats, leading to weakened immunity and an imbalance in vaginal probiotics, resulting in leukorrhea.

Dr. Li explained that infections in the vulva or vagina usually occur when immunity is low, allowing harmful bacteria to grow and cause redness and inflammation. Adults, when fatigued, may notice symptoms like bad breath or dry eyes and should replenish nutrients accordingly.

She urged parents to ensure children get at least nine hours of sleep (seven for adults). If a girl experiences vulvar itching, she should avoid sugary drinks and ice-based foods to prevent further weakening of the body. After diagnosis, oral antibiotics and ointments can improve the condition within about a week. Adults who are sexually active or those with irregular sleep schedules—such as flight attendants, retail workers, and night-shift employees—can maintain vaginal health through probiotic therapy.
