The key to successful weight loss is surprisingly related to sleep. A past study by the University of California found that women who slept 7 to 8 hours daily were slimmer. Those who slept less than 3 hours or more than 10 hours had a BMI exceeding 26, nearing obesity. Dr. Zhang Liren, a psychiatrist who once worked at National Taiwan University, weighed 79 kilograms seven years ago. He later left the large hospital, slept 7 to 9 hours daily, and lost 15 kilograms within two years.

Psychiatrist: "My waistline used to be 92 cm, now it’s 84 cm."

Losing three inches around the waist without deliberate weight loss—psychiatrist Dr. Zhang Liren actually shed 15 kilograms with this method.

Psychiatrist Dr. Zhang Liren: "By sleeping enough, 7 to 9 hours daily, hormones also became more balanced, and I naturally lost weight."

Previously working at National Taiwan University Hospital with insufficient sleep, Dr. Zhang’s weight hovered around 70 to 80 kilograms. After leaving the high-pressure environment, he slept adequately, normalized his lifestyle, and dropped from 79 kg to 64 kg in two years. Five years later, he still maintains a weight in the 60s.

Psychiatrist Dr. Zhang Liren: "When sleep-deprived, our adrenal stress hormones become unusually high, which affects hunger-regulating hormones like ghrelin and leptin, leading to imbalances. This makes us crave sweets uncontrollably. Switching to black coffee helps—a hot latte is 159 kcal, while black coffee is only 9 kcal, saving 150 kcal daily. Over a year, this could lead to a 6 kg weight loss."

Reducing calorie intake by sleeping enough isn’t just talk. A survey by the University of California, San Diego, found that women who slept 7 to 8 hours were the slimmest, with a BMI of just over 24. However, those who slept over 10 hours or under 3 hours had BMIs exceeding 26, indicating obesity. Comparatively, women who slept only 3 hours weighed 5 kg more on average than those who slept 7 hours.

Dr. Kang Rongcheng, Director of the Weight Management Center at Taiwan Adventist Hospital: "Our bodies are still active during sleep. Disrupting this physiological rhythm significantly reduces functions like fat burning and protein metabolism."

Doctors also recommend sleeping before midnight for the best results, combined with regular exercise, to lose weight healthily.
