Some cold medicines can no longer be taken! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today (17th) that medications containing fenspiride may pose sudden or severe life-threatening cardiac-related adverse reactions. Effective immediately, doctors are prohibited from prescribing medications with this ingredient. Patients currently using such medications should discontinue use and return for a follow-up visit as soon as possible to discuss alternative appropriate treatments with their original physician.

Cold Medicine Alert! This Ingredient Could Be Fatal

The FDA stated that recent reports from foreign health authorities indicate that medications containing fenspiride may cause sudden or severe life-threatening cardiac-related adverse reactions. To ensure public medication safety, the FDA has collected domestic and international data to reassess its clinical benefits and risks, and the issue was discussed by the Drug Safety Assessment Advisory Panel.

Discontinue Use Immediately—Patients Should Return for Follow-Up

The FDA explained that while no severe cardiac-related adverse reactions have been reported domestically from the use of this ingredient, considering that the approved indications for fenspiride include "nasopharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis," and safer alternatives are available in Taiwan, the licenses for medications containing fenspiride will be revoked starting June 17, 2020. From the date of the announcement, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, and medical institutions must immediately cease importing, manufacturing, distributing, displaying, dispensing, or retailing these products. License holders must also recall all market products within one month, by July 17, 2020.

The FDA reminds physicians that, starting June 17, 2020, they should no longer prescribe medications containing fenspiride for treating nasopharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, or other conditions, and should evaluate the feasibility of alternative treatments. Patients currently using such medications are advised to discontinue use and return for a follow-up visit promptly to discuss alternative appropriate treatments with their original physician.
