A spot check of towel products in Zhejiang, China, revealed that some products contained the highly carcinogenic substance "benzidine." Domestic doctors stated that benzidine is a banned dye with strong toxicity, which can cause poisoning through skin contact and lead to urinary tract tumors such as bladder cancer.

Lin Jieliang, Director of the Clinical Toxicology Department at Linkou Chang Gung Hospital, mentioned that benzidine is a confirmed human carcinogen. However, due to its low cost, despite being banned on both sides of the strait, there have been several incidents in China where unscrupulous towels and clothing were found to contain benzidine.

Benzidine can cause poisoning in humans through respiratory and skin contact, and long-term exposure to even small amounts can increase the risk of cancer. However, it is difficult to detect benzidine by the appearance of clothing; laboratory testing is required to confirm its presence. Given the large-scale dumping of Chinese-made towels in Taiwan, Lin Jieliang advises consumers to purchase towels from reputable merchants and avoid products with unclear labeling.

Additionally, boiling or washing new towels before use may help remove some benzene compounds.
