An international research team stated on the 20th that carbon nanotubes, hailed as a new "miracle" material, if made into long straight forms, act like asbestos. Long-term inhalation by humans may lead to lung cancer. The academic community calls for caution in the production of carbon nanotubes to prevent potential risks.

This international team conducted experiments by injecting different types of carbon nanotubes into the abdominal cavities of mice. The results showed that long straight carbon nanotubes caused inflammation and damage, which over time could lead to cancer.

Carbon nanotubes are made from carbon graphite, are only molecular in size, and are ultra-light and ultra-strong materials that can be used in various fields such as construction, structural engineering, and aerospace science.

However, since the development of carbon nanotubes nearly 20 years ago, scientists have been concerned that this material may harm human health, especially worrying that carbon nanotubes might act like asbestos. Asbestos was widely used in the 20th century until it was understood that long-term exposure to asbestos could lead to cancer of the lung lining, with a latency period that could last several decades.

The lead researcher, Professor Donaldson from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, stated that the research results indicate that products like carbon nanotubes must be carefully considered and further researched before being introduced to the market to avoid long-term health hazards. The research findings were published in the online edition of "Nature Nanotechnology."

However, the study also pointed out that short or curly carbon nanotubes do not cause the same damage as long straight ones, indicating that products made from carbon nanotubes can be designed to be safe.
