On May 3rd, a tropical cyclone suddenly struck Myanmar, resulting in 100,000 deaths. On the 12th, Sichuan was hit by a magnitude 8 earthquake, with over 20,000 deaths. In addition, in recent years, the frequency of strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions worldwide has increased. For example, in 2004, an undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused the most severe tsunami since 1782, devastating eleven countries and killing 230,000 people. Can all this be explained by "global warming"?

Scientists have noticed a deeper cause: global magnetic changes. It can explain the "global warming" above the ground as well as other increasingly frequent natural and man-made disasters from underground, underwater, on the ground, and in the air. Its influence is omnipresent: from individual minds, to national security, to international relations.

The Earth is a large magnet with north and south magnetic poles. The magnetic north pole is different from the geographic north pole (pointing to the North Star) and the rotational axis north pole, although the three poles are quite close. Since the explorer found the magnetic north pole in 1831, it has been moving in a straight line, and the speed has increased since 1975. At the same time, the Earth's magnetic field lines are also weakening. In recent years, airports around the world have been correcting magnetic readings more frequently.

Many experts believe that although the Earth's magnetic poles will not flip, they will shift significantly. The time when the currently accelerating moving magnetic pole begins to slow down is probably around 2012. The period from 2006 to 2018 will be a time of extreme instability in the world's magnetic field. The Earth's magnetic changes may reflect the movement of celestial bodies. Astronomers know that at the end of 2012, the Earth, the Sun, and the equator of the Milky Way will align, a phenomenon that occurs once every 26,000 years.

The effects of global magnetic changes are profound and wide-ranging. The Earth is like a large pumpkin, with the circumference along the equator being the widest. After 1998, the magma beneath the Earth's crust moved from the equator to other places. This may be the reason for more frequent earthquakes and volcanic activities. Even in Taiwan, there are related effects. After the 1999 921 earthquake, according to the 2005 survey, the temperature of the Datun Volcano Group increased by 10 to 20 degrees.

As the global magnetic force weakens, people's minds become restless. In recent years, chaos in the international community has emerged one after another. In 2001, the "911" attack killed 3,000 people. In 2005, a Danish cartoon that offended Islam actually caused more than ten deaths. After 2006, France experienced several riots and strikes. At the beginning of 2008, elections in Pakistan and Kenya triggered large-scale bloody conflicts. Even the most peaceful Buddhism has produced some violent elements in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, and even Tibet! The global human population has unconsciously entered a state of anxiety. Global magnetic changes combined with man-made global warming have led to frequent disasters. How should we respond?

First, cultivate the inner self and seek tranquility. Read good books, listen to beautiful music, engage in pottery, gardening, mountain climbing, swimming, watch the sunset, meditate, volunteer, etc. Do not let yourself become a slave to controversial political issues seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Second, value non-traditional security and develop substantive diplomacy. National security has far exceeded military, political, and economic aspects. The business community should sponsor research on "non-traditional security" to find business opportunities. The government should expand disaster relief diplomacy.

Third, transcend national boundaries and abandon the zero-sum concept. Natural disasters such as tsunamis do not recognize national borders. For their own long-term interests, major countries must cooperate. Faced with new global challenges, humanity must use new thinking to overcome difficulties together. The past logic was win or lose. In the future, international relations will either be win-win or lose-lose. Perhaps, due to human efforts and awakening, the challenge of global magnetic changes will instead open a new era of global mutual assistance, cooperation, and spiritual elevation.(The author previously served as a senior geologist at Manville Corporation in the United States and is currently a professor at the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies at Tamkang University.)
