The phenomenon of global warming has caused glaciers around the world to melt rapidly. French glacier experts conduct annual monitoring at Mont Blanc in the Alps at fixed times to understand the speed and impact of climate change. The latest discovery is that while glaciers previously receded by 30 centimeters annually, in 2006 they receded by 150 centimeters at once, proving that global warming is quite severe.

Mont Blanc in the French Alps is a famous destination for glacier viewing. On this day, French experts took a helicopter to the Mer de Glace at the northern end of Mont Blanc to conduct routine monitoring work.

The Mer de Glace, one of the three major glaciers of Mont Blanc, is seven kilometers long and 200 meters deep. By measuring winter snowfall and summer ice melt, experts can infer the rate of global warming.

This monitoring work has been conducted for half a century, and the statistics they have compiled are a concrete indicator of climate change, invaluable to scientists. Related research shows that between 1980 and 1990, glaciers were lost at an average rate of 30.48 centimeters per year, but after the millennium, this rate worsened to 50.8 centimeters. A report published by the United Nations Environment Programme in March this year pointed out that 2006 was the year with the most severe glacier recession, with an average of 1.5 meters, further highlighting the importance of energy conservation and carbon reduction.
