Lin Zhicheng / Taipei Report
The sheer number of universities in Taiwan has caught the world's attention! The Ministry of Education has released the latest data, indicating that starting from the new academic year of the 97th academic year, there are 171 tertiary institutions in our country, with over 1.3 million tertiary students enrolled.
The Ministry of Education stated that the 171 tertiary institutions include 156 universities and 15 junior colleges; 62 are public tertiary institutions, and 109 are private.
Today, August 1st, marks the beginning of the new academic year, with Dong Hwa University and Hualien University of Education merging to form the new "National Dong Hwa University." Li De Management College and Nan Kai Institute of Technology have successfully upgraded, renaming themselves Li De University and Nan Kai University of Technology, respectively.
Two years ago, an official from our science division stationed in Europe went to the Netherlands for an exchange. When briefing the Dutch academic community on the current state of higher education in Taiwan, he mentioned that Taiwan has 160 universities. A Dutch person immediately questioned, "Did you make a mistake? It should be 16, right?"
The official replied, "It's indeed 160," which shocked many in the Dutch academic community. The Netherlands, with a land area of 42,000 square kilometers and a population of over 16 million, has only 14 comprehensive universities and several dozen higher professional education institutions (mainly in applied arts and sciences).
Although the Netherlands has a small number of comprehensive universities, several are ranked within the top 100 worldwide. In contrast, Taiwan has an astonishing number of universities, yet none have made it into the world's top 100.
