Four years ago, Taipei City Councilor Chen Jinqi was shot and rushed to Taipei Veterans General Hospital for emergency treatment. Emergency physician Yang Zhijie had just opened Chen Jinqi's chest and was preparing to massage his heart when he suddenly collapsed with a "bang." This dramatic incident happened to Yang Zhijie because he relied on his youth and consumed fast food daily, leading to skyrocketing blood lipids that blocked his cardiovascular system, causing an acute myocardial infarction that nearly cost him his life.

At the time, Yang Zhijie was 33 years old. He explained that due to his rotating work shifts, his eating and sleeping schedules were irregular, and he almost daily consumed fast food like burgers, fried chicken, fries, and cola, resulting in a weight of 113 kilograms. Before Chen Jinqi's incident, he had already felt extremely tired. When Chen Jinqi was brought to the emergency room, amidst the chaos, Yang suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest and then lost consciousness.

The emergency room was already busy with a patient whose heart had been pierced by a bullet, and now the emergency physician himself needed urgent care. The hospital urgently called for additional doctors to assist. Cardiologist Chen Zhaowen performed an emergency cardiac catheterization and stent placement surgery on Yang Zhijie, discovering that one of Yang's cardiovascular vessels was completely blocked, while the other two, though not blocked, had narrowed due to plaque buildup on the vessel walls.

Chen Zhaowen, currently the chairman of the Republic of China Society of Lipids and Atherosclerosis, pointed out today that Yang Zhijie's cardiovascular condition was akin to that of someone aged 60 to 70. His total cholesterol level exceeded 300, and his triglyceride level was over 500, far exceeding normal values. Because he felt he was still young, he never imagined that hyperlipidemia had quietly crept up on him, causing his cardiovascular narrowing and leading to an acute myocardial infarction under extreme stress.

Chen Zhaowen mentioned that a recent online survey by the society collected 1,280 questionnaires from office workers, 90% of whom were frequent diners. Their overall knowledge about hyperlipidemia was failing, with over 60% unaware of the standard total cholesterol levels and 70% unaware that the risk of hyperlipidemia is the same for both genders. Moreover, 40% of the respondents had never paid attention to their cholesterol levels.

He stated that Yang Zhijie is a typical example: young, with an unrestrained diet, no exercise habits, never concerned about his blood lipids, and under significant work pressure. Cardiovascular narrowing and hardening usually occur after the age of 40, but patients may have had hyperlipidemia for over a decade without realizing it.

Chen Zhaowen said that a complete lipid test should include: total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides. Since general health check-ups only measure total cholesterol and triglycerides, he recommends that individuals with a family history of high blood cholesterol or a high-fat diet should self-fund a complete test when they start their careers. Those without a family history and with a lower-fat diet should have their first complete test before the age of 30.

Yang Zhijie has since left the emergency department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital and now serves as the director of the trauma department at Luodong Sacred Heart Hospital in Yilan County. After his near-death experience, he says he now eats more moderately and makes time for exercise. Occasionally, he still craves fast food and loves drinking cola, though he has switched to diet cola. His current weight is 90 kilograms. 951227
