Reporters Zhong Xiaoru and Wang Hongnian / Taipei Report (2007/03/22 18:39)

Tri-Service General Hospital has been embroiled in a scandal where a doctor accused another doctor from the same hospital of failing to save a patient. Huang Kunlun, a renowned physician specializing in treating decompression sickness, accused pediatric surgeon Chen Keqi of not making every effort to save his son, who died on the operating table two years ago. Chen Keqi, who had been avoiding the public, held a press conference in the afternoon to admit his negligence and was visibly emotional, choking up during the conference.

With a deep bow, Chen Keqi, a pediatrician at Tri-Service General Hospital, apologized to the family for the medical error that led to the death of an innocent life two years ago. What made it even more difficult for him to come to terms with was that the family member was another doctor from the same hospital, Huang Kunlun.

Two years ago, Huang Kunlun's youngest son underwent surgery to place an artificial blood vessel. During the procedure, the attending physician, Chen Keqi, accidentally injured the patient's blood vessel, causing internal bleeding and ultimately leading to the child's death on the operating table. Although two years have passed, Huang Kunlun's wife published an accusatory article on her blog earlier this year. The accused doctor, Chen Keqi, came forward in the afternoon to explain, holding his hands tightly and looking grave, expressing deep regret to the bereaved family.

Wiping away tears, Chen Keqi felt immense guilt, but no amount of sorrow could bring back the lost life. Huang Kunlun, the bereaved father, took his family to the United States for further studies in early February, leaving behind the place of sorrow. Two years after the incident, with the hospital's intervention, a settlement of 3.2 million was reached. However, the underlying tensions between the renowned doctors within the "white tower" of the hospital seem unresolved.
